In this course we will read and discuss four major and recent views on “free will” from the analytic tradition. What is free will? Is it an illusion and an evolutionary trick? Does it matter whether we have free will or not, for instance regarding moral responsibility, praise, and blame? The four views are the views by John Martin Fischer, Robert Kane, Derk Pereboom, and Manuel Vargas. They defend four positions that can be classified as: libertarian, compatibilist, hard compatibilst, and revisionist. There is a handy book that presents the views and arguments of these four philosophers together with their responses, i.e. each of them responds to the other three philosophers. All this makes eight chapters in the book, four presentations and four responses, together about 220 pages. This should be almost enough for the course. We will use this book and some additional material from the writings of these four authors.
